Practical Reminders for Cultivating Godly Relationships with Students

Working with students is more than teaching lessons or giving instructions. It is about walking with them, listening to them, and gently pointing them to Jesus, the Good Shepherd who loves and leads His sheep. Below are some practical reminders to help cultivate godly relationships that truly impact students’ lives.

1. See Students as Souls, Not Just Learners

Students are not projects to be managed or problems to be solved. Each one is a soul deeply loved by God. When we relate with them from this perspective, our words become kinder, our patience grows, and our guidance becomes more meaningful.

2. Build Trust Before You Give Correction

Students listen better when they feel safe and respected. Take time to know their names, interests, struggles, and strengths. When trust is built, correction is no longer seen as punishment but as care. Just like the Good Shepherd, we must first gain their confidence.

3. Lead by Example, Not by Force

Students learn more from what we do than what we say. If we want them to grow in kindness, humility, and faith, we must model these virtues daily. A godly life quietly lived often speaks louder than many sermons.

4. Listen More Than You Speak

Sometimes, students do not need quick advice; they need someone who will listen. Create space for honest conversations. When students feel heard, their hearts open, and that is where God’s truth can gently enter.

5. Correct with Love, Not Anger

Discipline is necessary, but it must be rooted in love. Correct students with calmness and clarity, not frustration. When correction reflects God’s grace, students learn responsibility without losing hope.

6. Pray for Them and With Them

Prayer is one of the strongest ways to shepherd students’ hearts. Pray for their growth, their homes, and their future. When appropriate, pray with them. This helps them see that God is not distant, but present and caring.

7. Point Them to Jesus, Not Yourself

Our goal is not for students to admire us, but to know Christ. Always redirect attention to the Good Shepherd, His love, His truth, and His example. Help them understand that Jesus is the One who truly guides, heals, and leads.

8. Be Consistent and Faithful

Godly relationships are built over time. Be steady in love, firm in truth, and faithful in presence. Even when students struggle or drift, your consistency can remind them of God’s unchanging care.
