You Are More Than Your Likes: Building an Identity That Lasts
Let’s be honest, getting likes feels good.
That little thumbs-up can make you smile and feel noticed. Maybe you post a picture, share a funny video, or write a clever caption, and the notifications start rolling in. For a moment, it feels like you matter more because people are paying attention. But here’s the truth you need to hold on to: your value is not tied to those numbers.
Likes are temporary. They rise and fall. People’s opinions change faster. If you build your confidence on something as fragile as online approval, you’ll always feel like you have to chase the next big post to stay important. That’s exhausting, and it’s not the life God wants for you.
Long before you created an account or uploaded a photo, God already called you valuable. The Bible says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). That means your worth is built into who you are, it’s not something you earn with followers, comments, or views. God’s love doesn’t shrink when your post gets only two likes, and it doesn’t grow when you go viral. His love is steady. Unshakable. Eternal.
When we start to believe that likes equal love, we can lose ourselves. We post what we think will get attention instead of what’s real. We compare our everyday lives to someone else’s carefully edited highlights. That kind of thinking steals joy and creates pressure to perform instead of simply being.
The key to lasting identity is to build it on something that never fades. Spend time with God. Remind yourself of His promises. Surround yourself with people who care about you, not just your online image. Learn new skills. Chase dreams that can’t be measured in emojis.
Likes can be fun, but they are not your foundation.
Next time you post, check your heart. Are you sharing because it’s true to you, or because you’re fishing for approval? If it’s the second one, pause and remember: you are already enough. You are already loved. You don’t have to prove your worth to anyone, not even to yourself.
Your identity is not in a feed or a number. It’s in the God who created you, knows you, and calls you His own. And that, is worth far more than a million likes.
